BB HANDS ON: VOLUNBEERS
This year I made it a goal to get involved on a more consistent basis. I found that I wasn’t volunteering as much as I wanted to, fitting in a food sorting or clean-up day when my schedule permitted but not really doing it on a routine basis. I felt like something was missing, but it’s been so hard juggling new job responsibilities and working weekends. My life and routine just isn’t the same as it was a few years ago. Still I was set on finding something that fit my schedule and something that I could commit to over a long period of time.
And then I came across VolunBEERS. VolunBEERS is an organization that organizes events for volunteers to make some type of craft or project that is then donated to other non-profits in the San Diego region. In the past they have made blankets, hygiene kits, plant stakes, etc. The fun part is that these events take place at a brewery! So on top of giving back, volunteers get to socialize and have a beer (hence the name). With events being held quarterly, I knew this was a commitment I could make. So after inquiring and having a telephone interview, I was elated to be joining such an awesome committee!
The most recent event was on September 11th so it made sense to have some projects that were patriotic and benefited the military. One craft was creating patriotic magnets for military families in Operation Homefront's Transitional Housing Village which is a program that allows service members who have been medically discharged to live rent free while they go through the transition process back into civilian life. The magnets will help brighten up their homes and show appreciation for their service while they navigate their transition. The second project was decorating toiletry bags that were donated to military families served by Support the Enlisted Project (STEP). Donations of deodorant and toothbrushes as well as travel size toothpaste, lotion, and shampoo were collected during the event to put inside of the toiletry bags.
It was awesome seeing people coming together to help out others and having a good time time while doing so. At the end of the event we were able to donate 76 sets of magnets and 78 toiletry bags. Our volunteers also donated over 500 toiletry items which included everything from soap to toothbrushes. It’s so beautiful the impact we can make we when get together. I love that I can play in a role in helping coordinate the event and ensuring that it runs smoothly. And just like it will be time to start thinking about the next one! If you live in San Diego and want to check out the next event then keep your eyes on the VolunBEERS page for updates.
