Life has been crazy and I am finally get into a good routine again including working out. I have to admit that my fitness is the first thing to fly out the window when life gets hectic. But the last two weeks it feels good hitting the gym and running a few miles. It isn’t easy, especially when my body is sore, but it’s always worth it. And I came across an extra motivating factor to get myself moving when I’d rather hit the snooze button again- The Vizer App!

The Vizer App allows residents in San Diego County to turn their workouts into food donations. I know that food insecurity is a big deal here in San Diego with the cost of living skyrocketing and homelessness people at an all time high. 1 in 7 San Diegans suffer from food insecurity, meaning they don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

I could not wait to download this app, get moving, and start giving back. I set a goal for myself to hit 10,000 steps in a day which I know wouldn’t be too hard to accomplish on the days that I go for a run. On my first day using the app I went for a 2 mile run in the morning which got me to over 4,000 steps. The run was shorter than I wanted but I knew I could easily make up the rest of 6,000 steps throughout the day. I made sure to take my two 15 minute breaks during my work day and went on a walk instead of scrolling through my phone. And for once I was grateful for the parking lot being so far away from my office building which got me in an extra 500 steps each way. By the end of my work day I had reached around 9300 steps, so I knew I had about 700 more steps to go. When I got home after work I walked my dog just 5 minutes longer than I usually do which brought me over 10,000 steps! When I hit my goal by the end of the day I was able to donate 1 meal for a San Diegan in need to the San Diego Food Bank. It felt good knowing that I used my time today to give back to someone in my community and it was simply by doing things that I do everyday anyways (running and walking). To make it even sweeter, when you donate meals you unlock points to redeem at local businesses. I’m excited to get some freebies at my favorite restaurant and flower shop.

I am excited to keep up with my fitness routine and hit some longer runs this summer. I know that I won’t just be getting healthier but also making a huge impact in my community too!
