MAKE A DIFFERENCE: BOOK LOVE
We are huge book worms. We love getting lost between the pages of a good book and falling in love with characters we feel like we know personally. Books are amazing for so many reasons. They give us the ability to think outside of the limitations of our own life and allow us to open up our imaginations to new possibilities. They make us laugh, make us cry, and have us turning the pages in suspense. Reading books can provide more than just entertainment. When we read we have the ability to increase our vocabulary and memory, and also learn about new subjects and information that we might not otherwise have been exposed to. Books have the ability to teach us, move us, and change our lives.
Did you know there are approximately 2.3 million people incarcerated in the United States? The United States has more people in prison per capita than any other nation. And while we understand that the prison system is used as a form of punishment, we also understand that there are some individuals that have been wrongfully sentenced, and others that wish to serve their time and have the second chance in society they deserve. We believe that our justice system can do more to rehabilitate prisoners, including better preparing them for re-entry after serving their time. Many prepare by studying to obtain their GED or brushing up on knowledge and vocabulary for a job, therefore prison libraries are usually the only resource prisoners have to prepare for re-entry.
Prisons libraries across the country are in need of books. If you are book worms like us, you probably have plenty of books around that can bring someone else as much joy as they brought you and truly make a difference in changing someones life.
Below we've linked a few different sites/resources on where you can get more information on how to donate your books to a prison. Be sure to read the requirements as each prison might have different needs that currently need to be met and have limitations on what can be donated. If you don't see anything on this list, a quick google search can help you find a non-profit to donate to in your state/area.
1. The Prison Library Project (Multiple states/cities)
2. Open Book (Florida)
4. Inside Books Project (Austin, Tx)
So take a look at your collection (or personal library) and see what books you can donate to help make a huge difference in the lives of other who wish to have a second chance.
