MAKE A DIFFERENCE: DONATE SOCKS
I’m excited that it’s starting to finally feel like fall here in San Diego. I love waking up to foggy mornings and cooler temperatures. And even though it warms up greatly by the end of the day I still have to wear a sweater and boots to stay warm when I leave the house in the morning. It’s safe to say that I am completely jealous off the places where they get to experience all the seasons. But come January when the temperature really drops, I know I’ll be wishing for beach days.
Cold weather might be an inconvenience for most of us. But for those that are homeless, the change in seasons can mean a fight for health and survival. And while homeless shelters receive an increase of coats and warm clothing in the fall and winter, there is one item that they are constantly in need of—socks. Yes, socks are the most needed yet least donated article of clothing to homeless shelters! A pair of socks can prevent a person from getting foot infections and also prevent frostbite in freezing temperatures. One thing about socks though is that they must be donated new since a used pair can spread bacteria and fungus. However, a pair of new socks is a very, very inexpensive clothing item that can help save someone’s life!
New socks can be donated to a local homeless shelter or organization. In addition there are plenty of organizations that specifically focus on giving socks to the homeless, such as The Joy of Sox and The Alpha Project. You can make a monetary donation to one of these organizations so that they can purchase the socks and distribute them. Lastly, there is nothing thats stopping you from handing out a new pair of socks to a person in need. But of course don’t put yourself in a situation where you feel unsafe.
One simple article of clothing can help save a life!
